BOWLING GREEN, OHIO (August 11, 2021) – Northern Illinois, Boise State and Springfield posted the top three team grade-point averages (GPAs) for the 2020-21 academic year based on data submitted to the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA).
Overall, there were 58 teams with a team GPA of 3.5 or more on a 4.0 scale, up from 53 teams last year. There were 223 (15.41%) student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA, and a record number – 1,059 (73.19%) – of gymnasts with a 3.5 or better GPA. Last year there were 889 (65.56%) Scholastic All-America team members. This is the first time we have had more than 1,000 honorees.
“Congratulations to the student-athletes, coaches, and support staff on a record-breaking year of academic success,” Kerrie Turner, WCGA president and head coach at Bowling Green, said. “The balance needed to be a successful student and athlete takes considerable planning and intentional effort, which was certainly heightened during pandemic conditions. I am thrilled to see women’s gymnastics achieving incredibly high standards in the classroom during this challenging time.”
Northern Illinois posted the top team GPA with a 3.874 and had 20 student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5 or more. The Huskies have been in the top five for the last three years and finished third in team GPA last year. Every team member had a 3.5 or better, and Head Coach Sam Morreale’s team had eight team members with a 4.0 GPA.
Boise State has been in the top five for team GPA for the last seven years, posting a 3.8565 GPA for the No. 2 ranking in 2021. Seventeen members of Head Coach Tina Bird’s team had a 3.50 or better, including three with a 4.0.
Head coach Jennifer Najuch’s Springfield squad moved up from No. 7 in 2020 to No. 3 this year with a team GPA of 3.8542. This includes 24 student-athletes with a 3.5 or above, including five with a 4.0
